The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Luke 1. 28
From the day I was born in Christ, God imparted to me a supernatural enthusiasm that took me from “I won’t be able to change” to “everything will change.”
That day, in an instant, after saying, “I accept you, Jesus, as my Lord and Savior,” my whole perspective about the possibilities in my life changed — not because a visible difference had already appeared in the outcomes of my life or in my personal expectations, but because the awareness that God saw me as capable — capable of doing it, of living differently, of being different — dropped into my spirit.
Only my perspective changed, but it was enough to transform the way I experienced my life in that very moment.
Today, I am concerned for those who feel disadvantaged because of loss, failure, debt, challenges, sickness, disability, depression, or being considered irrelevant by current social standards. I don’t claim to have the authority to speak into every one of those situations, because honestly, I don’t know what it feels like to be in all of them. But I do claim that there is a perspective that can make all the difference.
When Mary was visited by the angel, he said: “You are highly favored.” And that’s what i have come to tell you. Why was she favored? Because she was chosen to host the Son of God. Mary was favored so that she can carry a unique dimension of God in her life. As humans, what can be more precious, more glorious, than to be encountered by God and to be a witness of a part of Him?
Mary was favored with an exclusive relationship with God, and yet it came at a cost: her reputation, the trust of her fiancé at one point, her geographic stability, and even threats against her life and family. Today, many would probably love the idea of carrying Jesus like Mary did — but would they also love the price attached to it?
You may be sick, depressed, known as a failure, seen as irrelevant, in debt, or grieving the loss of someone. You may have even been in prison. But if everything in your life were perfect, how then could you be eligible to host a unique dimension of God?
Same to your challenge, Jesus’ death was a terrible event in the eyes of His disciples. But that supposedly terrible situation was hidding the foundation for the resurrection of many. I want to tell you that there is a unique opportunity hidden within your challenge or your sickness — if only you decide to seek God and worship Him in it. It’s where the void exists that God can come and fill it with himself. He who has everything you lack will never know the depth of God you are about to discover — until he lacks it too. Your unique situation is a special path toward the expression of a special aspect of the God who is sufficient for us.
I am simply trying to help someone consider God’s perspective. Yes, we can desire His healing, His blessing, a change of circumstances. But like James or the Hebrew boys about to be thrown in the fire, can we get to the point where we say: “Whether you heal me or not, whether you save me or not, YOU are my blessing.”
It is not wrong to expect healing, but it is greater to become a living sign of worship, a record of devotion to Him.
I prefer to carry that testimony before His eyes: “Whether you deliver me from the fire, whether you heal me, You will always remain the passion of my heart.” This dimension is possible if we ask God.
But those who trust in the Lord renew their strength. They soar like eagles; they run, and never grow weary; they walk, and never grow weary. God can build this strength in you if you want it and ask for it continually.
Pray with me:
This difficult situation is my blessing, a chance to become stronger in my union with You, to draw nearer to Your heart, to see life from Your perspective. You are my hope, my reputation, my health, my bank, my treasure, my passion. You are enough, without the fire, without the sickness, I might never have been desperate enough to seek You. Thank You for this situation that makes me discover a greater reason to rejoice. I now see Your name and Your reign being strengthened in my heart.
When the disciples asked why a man was born blind, You answered: “So that the glory of God may be revealed.” I know my deficiency is for you Glory to be revealed through me.
Lord, give me a heart and a mind that will continue to pursue You — even after You’ve changed the situation.
MY CHALLENGE IS PROOF THAT I’M FAVORED, BECAUSE IT’S A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO KNOW YOU. YOU, THE TRUE TREASURE OF MANKIND.
